The design of the clustered campus was inspired by its vision for becoming a hallmark postgraduate institution for the advancement of Arabic and International relations. To act as a forward-looking think thank, the project culminates to produce a modern day village, or Madinat Qaryat. With the grouping of educational facilities, auditoriums, library, residences, research offices and integrated collaborative spaces, the tapestry of buildings woven throughout the one million square foot campus was unified through the application of vernacular design and materials reflective of the Arab region. Limestone, wood trellises and shading devices combine to highlight the geometric beauty of moiré patterns typical of the Arabic culture. The study of local architecture led to the implementation of many passive cooling strategies in the notoriously hot climate of Qatar. Deep punched windows, shaded lattice works, tight network of outdoor pathways and courtyards, windcatchers, and water features help to support this oasis of intellectual discourse and dialogue. Completed in 2016, the project was a global collaboration between the B+H Architects teams in both Toronto and Dubai.
