As part of a limited tender awarded to B+H Architects to develop a Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MoHLTC) Stage 1 Masterplan, the primary design challenges of the new population demands on the existing Mississauga Hospital were to understand the complex interfaces of the various hospital buildings, constructed between 1958 and 2008. The study resulted in a comprehensive evaluation of the hospital needs as indicated by a provided clinical plan for program and functionality needed for the growing hospital. From this evaluation, the team developed several options of massing and out-of-box site approaches that were based on a typical clinical engine arrangement. Phasing for the master plan studies was a critical component of the work, as operation of the existing facilities had to be coordinated to align with any future buildings. The site would take advantage of existing buildings which met the health care planning standards, and suggested a gradual decanting of the current hospital, with a new primary facility and central landscaped park to frame a new campus configuration.
